چکیده

New developments in the theory and numerical simulation of a recently proposed one-dimensional nonlinear time-dependent fluid model (Avinash K, Bhattacharjee A and Hu S 2003 Phys. Rev. Lett. 90 075001) for void formation in dusty plasmas are presented. The model describes an initial instability caused by the ion drag, rapid nonlinear growth, and a nonlinear saturation mechanism that realizes a quasi-steady state containing a void. The earlier one-dimensional model has been extended to two and three dimensions (the latter, assuming spherical symmetry), using a more complete set of dynamical equations than was used in the earlier one-dimensional formulation. The present set of equations includes an ion continuity equation and a nonlinear ion drag operator. Qualitative features of void formation are shown to be robust with respect to different functional forms of the ion drag operator. Modulational instability of dust ion acoustic waves in astrophysical dusty plasmas with non thermal electrons

Propagation of dust ion acoustic waves in plasmas composed of nonthermal distributed electrons and stationary dust particles is investigated. Nonlinear Schrdinger equation is derived to describe small amplitude waves, using the reduction perturbation technique. Modulation instability of dust ion acoustic waves is analysed for this system. Parametric investigation indicates that growth rate of...

Modeling Dusty Plasma Discharges of Noble Gases Using a Self-Consistent Fluid Model

Complex plasmas, which consist of electrons, ions and charged micro-particles, are an interesting and largely unexplored state of matter. One of the most intriguing phenomena in complex plasmas is the formation of dust-free voids in micro-gravity experiments. In order to achieve an isotropic dusty plasma system, this void must be closed. Using a self-consistent fluid model to simulate plasma be...

Probe induced voids in a dusty plasma

Dusty plasmas are susceptible to the formation of a ‘‘void,’’ a centimeter-size region within the plasma that is free of dust particles. The boundary between the dust-free plasma ~void! and the dusty plasma is typically quite sharp. Praburam and Goree first reported the appearance of a spoke-shaped, dust-free region in a cloud of 100-nm carbon particles in a radio-frequency discharge formed bet...

Theory of dust voids in plasmas.

Dusty plasmas in a gas discharge often feature a stable void, i.e., a dust-free region inside the dust cloud. This occurs under conditions relevant to both plasma processing discharges and plasma crystal experiments. The void results from a balance of the electrostatic and ion drag forces on a dust particle. The ion drag force is driven by a flow of ions outward from an ionization source and to...

On non-linear excitation of voids in dusty plasmas

The void, which is a dust-free region inside the dust cloud in the plasma, results from a balance of the electrostatic force and the ion drag force on a dust particulate. The ion drag force having numerous forms, some of which are based on models whereas others are driven from first principles. To explain the generation of voids, Avinash et al. proposed a timedependent nonlinear model that desc...
